Weekly Update! Week of September 18h

The principal, Michael Mal of Bacon Academy announced today that Toheed Usman has been named a Commended Student in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to this scholastically talented student. 

About 34, 000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2027 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the competition by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests (PSAT/NMSQT). 

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.” 

Arrival: Doors open at 7:00 PM and lock at 8:00 PM.

Departure: Dance ends at 10:00 PM.

Congratulations! We are excited to share that Zyyear has been selected as a Week 2 nominee for USA Football’s 2026 Heart of a Giant Award, presented by the New York Giants and Hospital for Special Surgery. 

 

As a Week 2 nominee, Zyyear will have the opportunity to share their story and compete for the chance to advance as one of the program’s finalists. Six weekly winners will advance as finalists and receive a $1,000 equipment grant for their high school football program. Additional finalists will also be selected through the program’s honorable-mention process. 

Voting opens: Thursday, September 17 at 5:00 p.m. 

Voting closes: Sunday, October 4 at 11:59 p.m.  

Week 2 Finalist Announced: Monday, October 5 at 12:00 p.m.

The Bacon Academy Girls Cross Country Team won the 38th annual Coginchaug Invitational on Thursday. The Bobcats were led by Junior Kiersten Page who finished 3rd overall in a time of 20:22, followed by Freshman Olivia Carrington in 12th place in 22:59, Lila Wilson in 13th place in 23:08, Ashtyn King in 15th place in 23:32 and rounding out the top 5 was Ryleigh Angell in 16th place in 23:39.

The Bacon Academy Boys Cross Country Team finished 3rd led by overall race winner Boden Paul in a blazing time of 16:36, he was followed by Ben Adams in 5th place in 17:25, River Bohn 20th place in 19:24, Freshman Owen Murphy finished 25th in a time of 19:48 and Alex Courtemanche rounded out the top 5 with a 33rd place finish in 19:58.

Bacon Academy also won the overall combined boys and girls championship for the 2nd year in a row.

Drawing I students do a “smARTie” each day when they enter the studio. It’s their daily dose of art/art history to learn about and comment on. The smARTie for 9/16-17 was Keith Haring, and Liam McLear was on his game without even trying!

Bacon Academy School Counseling will be hosting representatives from colleges and universities throughout the school year. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about colleges of interest, ask questions, and connect with admissions representatives!

For students to register, students must go onto Naviance and go to the “What’s New” tab. From there, they will be able to select which meeting they would like to attend.
